Carl has a PhD in Psychology which was awarded by the University of Hull for his research into the effects of counselling and guided imagery on the outcome of people with Ischaemic Heart Disease. Prior to that he gained an MA in Counselling from the University of Keele, and holds a number of other qualifications including a Diploma in Psychosexual Therapy from UEL, certificates in Traumatic Incident Reduction Therapy, Systemic Practice, Practice Supervision and Professional Practice in Spiritual Companionship, is accredited with EFT International as an advanced EFT practitioner and mentor and is an accredited facilitator of the Penny Brohn Cancer Care Living Well with the Impact of Cancer course.
Carl has close to 30,000 hours of clinical experience in counselling and is an experienced supervisor of counsellors.
Carl holds advanced qualifications in nursing and is a member of the Royal College of Nursing, and has been accredited by the American Psychological Association for using Guided Imagery with people with life threatening illness. He is a member of the Association of Humanistic Psychology (GB). Those three organisations have strong ethical standards, to which Carl subscribes. He is also, currently, the Chair of the Ethics Team at EFT International.
Carl is a former member of the New York Academy of Science, has lectured in counselling at Bretton Hall College, Wakefield, and is an approved supervisor and training therapist for Nottingham Trent University, Sheffield Hallam University and Doncaster College. He supervised the work of a team of 25 counsellors in a counselling agency for 9 years. He has worked with people with life threatening illnesses (especially cancer) for many years and has been Chair of the Trustees of National Cancer Support (Reg Charity328634/1133463) with whom he was involved for 30 years. He facilitates workshops around the country on a number of topics including guided imagery, shamanic journey, healing and tai chi, is accredited as a 'Living Well with the Impact of Cancer' course facilitator with Penny Brohn Cancer Care in Bristol,and has recently co-written a mentorship training workshop forAdvanced EFT practitioners.
Before establishing 'PersonalPotential' in January 2000, Carl was a Specialist Consultant in Counselling at Pontefract General Infirmary, in West Yorkshire, UK, taking direct referrals from GP's and other consultants, and providing training for hospital staff in counselling skills, stress management, assertiveness and anger management. During his 6 years of tenure as Head of Counselling at Pontefract, he spent approximately 6000 hours in 1-to-1 therapy with clients and supervised the work of a number of qualified and trainee counsellors.
